Description
The ISU-122 self-propelled artillery mount was created in the fall of 1943 on the basis of the IS heavy tank. These machines were equipped with A-19 guns with a caliber of 122 mm with an initial velocity of a 25 kg projectile of 781 m / s, which pierced 145 mm armor from a distance of 1 km.
The general layout of the ISU-122 heavy self-propelled artillery mount is similar to the layout of other self-propelled guns: the bow location of the control compartment and the fighting compartment and the aft location of the engine compartment. In addition to the cannon, the self-propelled gun was equipped with a 12.7 mm DShK anti-aircraft machine gun.
ISU-122 was intended to destroy enemy tanks and break through fortification lines, in this case special assault groups could be attached to it (“Zvezda” No. 3509).
